A Person Wrapping Gauze Around Their Hand To Protect A Wound

Caring for Wounds with Splints and Wraps

Wound care is vital to prevent infection and reduce the risk of re-injury. It also helps speed recovery while keeping the patient as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Whether a wound is a result of surgery or an injury, you should always follow your physician’s instructions. If a physician wasn’t involved, research and observe wound care best practices.

Prior to shopping for wound care products, please consult the care plan provided by your physician. Ask questions if necessary, and make sure you fully understand all instructions. Clarify what products to get as well as how to use them for your current needs.

Commonly used post-surgery or post-injury resources include gauze and dressings; bandages and adhesives; hydrogels; ointments; heating and cooling products; compression aids; splints; wraps; and so much more. On this page, we’ll focus on two primary categories: Splints and wraps.

Splints

Splints are designed to restrict motion and to protect or immobilize a body part. Some are completely rigid and some are somewhat flexible. Dynamic splints permit controlled motion, such as the hinged motion of the knee or elbow. Splints often rely on hook-and-loop material to connect. They’re widely used to help sprains and repetitive motion injuries like carpal tunnel.

Wraps

Wraps are less rigid than splints. They also serve to immobilize or restrict motion. Wraps may also be intended to provide compression, which helps combat swelling. In some cases, a reusable wrap can be helpful for keeping wound dressing in place.

Bandages and Dressings

Dressings are products that are designed to cover wounds, while bandages are used to keep dressings in place. Dressing a wound is necessary to protect the area from infection, and to absorb blood and other fluids. Every household should have a few different bandages and dressings on hand for emergencies.

Medical Tape

Medical tape is an important addition to any first-aid kit. This product is used to hold bandages in place, and it’s designed to be comfortable against the skin. Medical tape can have a sticky adhesive backing, or it can be made with a self-adhesive material.

Contact Layers

Contact layers are non-adherent bandages that are applied directly to the wound site. They are made with woven or mesh materials that allow fluids to drain. Contact layers conform easily to the body, and they can be adjusted and removed without irritating the wound.

Compression Aids

Compression aids are used to promote circulation and healing in weak and injured areas of the body. They are often prescribed to patients with muscle and joint injuries. Compression aids can also treat venous diseases, such as lymphedema and deep vein thrombosis.
